Please join the Tompkins Chamber for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new Yurt at Ithaca Children's Garden!
Remarks by:
Jennifer Tavares, President & CEO, Tompkins Chamber
Candice Meade, Executive Director, Ithaca Children's Garden
Ithaca Children’s Garden celebrates the opening of its first indoor classroom.
The endeavor to bring a four-season shelter to Ithaca Children’s Garden to protect the most vulnerable from weather extremes has been many years in the making. Construction on the community-supported 30-foot yurt began this spring, continued throughout the summer, and is now complete; just in time to be used for winter.
“As the season grows cold, support from the ICG community is felt even more and has made possible a critically needed piece of Garden infrastructure.” says Ithaca Children’s Garden Executive Director, Candice Meade “The yurt improves health and safety while keeping the magical spark of the Garden aflame during freezing temperatures and dangerous weather. And the children look eagerly toward the enjoyment of their new, sheltered program space!”
Highlights of the yurt include:
- ADA compliant restroom outfitted with a baby changing station
- Additional hand washing facilities and drinking fountains exterior to the restroom
- ADA compliant wrap-around deck and access ramp
- Full electrical with heating and cooling.
To celebrate the completion of the yurt, ICG is holding two community events at Ithaca Children’s Garden, 121 Turtle Lane:
Celebrate the yurt’s grand opening, and meet the hearts and hands behind the yurt’s installation on Wednesday, November 2nd at 12 PM with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce.
See the inside of the yurt that will be used as a program hub at their open house event on Saturday, November 5th from 11 AM to 1 PM. An ICG educator will host a hands-on, garden activity and light refreshments will be served at the open house.
Ithaca Children’s Garden is honored to share this momentous occasion with the community that helped to make it happen, and hope to see many smiling faces in the Garden soon.
